Stock Market Today: February 18, 2020

02/18/2020 The stock market started in the red today, after the three day holiday weekend, on news that the coronavirus outbreak was worse than expected in China. Meantime, Apple (AAPL) stated that the contagion would impact its operations and sales in the first quarter. This sent the market lower in early trading with the Dow Jones Industrial Average lower by as much as 281 points. However, the market became oversold, which caused the indices to rebound and retake a substantial portion of the day’s losses. The NASDAQ even reached the green for a brief spell.

Dow 30 Earnings: Walmart Inc. Fiscal Fourth Quarter 2019

02/18/2020 General goods retailer Walmart Inc. (WMT) reported slightly worse-than-expected results for the fiscal fourth quarter ended January 21, 2020. Total revenue of $141.7 billion rose 2.1% year over year, but fell 3.3% short of our estimate. Too, adjusted earnings per share of $1.38 were $0.03 below the year-ago figure. Same-store sales for Walmart U.S. were up 1.9%, missing the 3% mark Walmart had been forecasting. Increases in traffic and the average transaction amount were roughly the same.

Stock Market Today: November 18, 2019

11/18/2019 The futures market started positively, as an interest-rate cut in China buoyed the S&P 500 futures to an all-time high. The accommodative policy was seen as a positive by many traders. But by the time the stock market opened, this move higher was erased, as concerns about U.S. trade negotiations with China took hold. The Dow, S&P 500, and NASDAQ reached all-time highs during the session. Then, the composites tapered off in the final portion of trading and ended not too far off of breakeven levels. All told, the Dow closed higher by 31 points, the S&P 500 finished up two points, and the NASDAQ.

Stock Market today: November 11, 2019

11/11/2019 The market started trading lower on the Veterans’ Day holiday, as sentimentfell concerning a U.S. trade deal with China. Traders sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 164 points, while the other indices were lower in tandem. However, a few news stories broke throughout the day, which helped to lift the markets higher. These included that Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA), a Dow-component company, received a takeout proposal from a public/private equity company. Additionally, Boeing (BA) provided an update on its 737 MAX planes. Management stated that if the FAA accepts the company's updated training requirements, they are expecting customer deliveries in December and that they expect commercial service to begin in January. These reports sent the market higher, and the Dow eventually reached the green. However, the S&P 500 and NASDAQ remained below breakeven levels. All told, the Dow closed higher by 10 points, eking out a record close. On the other hand, the S&P 500 was down six points, and the NASDAQ was off by 11 points.

Stock Market Today: November 4, 2019

11/04/2019 The marketstartedquite positively today, as the bulls were emboldened by favorable comments regarding the United States-China trade negotiations. The marketshit all-time highs on the Dow Jones IndustrialAverage, the NASDAQ Composite, and the S&P 500 Index in the first few moments of the trading session. The composites then pulled back a bit as the session progressed, but then strengthened anew near the end of the day. All told, the Dow closed higher by 115 points; the NASDAQ was up 47 points; and the S&P 500 finished 11 points to the upside.

Stock Market Today: August 19, 2019

08/19/2019 The stock market started positively today, as a rebound from last week’s selloff continued. Additionally, the U.S. government extended the time that Chinese technology firm Huawei could buy supplies from U.S. companies for an additional 90 days. Investors viewed this as an easing of trade tensions between the two countries and, thus, bolstered the major market composites. All told, the Dowclosed higher by 250 points, the S&P 500 rose by 35 points, and the NASDAQ gained 107 points.

Stock Market Today: August 16, 2019

08/16/2019 The major U.S. equity indexes started the last session of a volatile trading week firmly in positive territory, and stocks ended the day up sharply. In economic news, the Commerce Department reported that housing starts were down 4%, to an annual rate of 1.19 million. However, building permits (a more forward-looking indicator) increased 8.4%, to a yearly rate of 1.34 million. The markets, though, largely looked past these numbers, and continued to bob and weave along with developments on the U.S.-China trade situation.
