Stock Market Today: October 15, 2020

10/15/2020 The current trading week on Wall Street started out on a positive note, with the major averages posting nice gains on Monday. However, the bulls have been quiet since, with the indexes retracing those advances and then some over the last two days. Before the market’s open, the equity futures point to a continuation of the selling that picked up at the end of yesterday’s session. The primary culprit is COVID-19.

Stock Market Today: October 14, 2020

10/14/2020 Following a stellar start to an often volatile, but frequently rather positive, month of October, including another sizzling performance on Monday, the stock market took a modest stepback yesterday, with losses in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500 Index, and the NASDAQ. Much of the shortfall, which came to 158 points in the Dow, reflected some softness in the financial and industrial sectors. Still, even after yesterday's setback, the blue chips still are just about flat on the year, despite a monumental collapse in late March as the coronavirus swept the globe.

Stock Market Today: July 15, 2020

07/15/2020 After a topsy-turvy equity market session on Monday in which the major indexes roared out to a strong first half of the day before wilting near the close on new coronavirus fears, thestock market came back to push forward nicely yesterday morning. Once more it was optimism about corporate earnings and some hopes that despite the difficult news on the COVID-19 front that the recent reopening of the economy would continue with few interruptions. Unlike Monday, though, stocks did not falter late in the day.

Stock Market Today: July 6, 2020

07/06/2020 The investment community will return this week from a long holiday weekend as the U.S. equity and bond markets were closed on Friday in observance of the Independence Day holiday. The mood on Wall Street improved last week, with sentiment helped by some encouraging reports on the U.S. economy. A better-than-expected jobs report for the month of June, as well as an encouraging reading on consumer confidence gave equities a boost even with lingering worries about a resurgence of coronavirus cases in several states that aggressively opened their economies.

04/14/2020 Following a one of the best weeks for the stock market in decades, with the recent holiday shortened four-day span seeing the major equity averages move out of bear territory. Looking ahead to a new day, following yesterday's mostly lower session, we see that the equity futures are poised to start the latest session nicely to the upside on optimistic government plans to re-open the country.

Stock Market Today: April 13, 2020

04/13/2020 Wall Streetended the recent holiday-shortened trading weekwith yet one more advance, securing a solid wire-to-wire win for stocks on the strength of somewhat less-frightful disease projections for the United States in the weeks to come, higher oil quotations, and the adoption of an even more aggressive monetary stance by the Federal Reserve. Now, this morning, the futures are pointing to a softer opening, albeit just modestly so, when trading resumes shortly.

Stock Market Today: January 21, 2020

01/21/2020 The stock market started in the red today, as tradersentimentwaned over the three-day holiday weekend. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 70 points in the early part of the session, while the other indices were down in tandem. However, the markets started to rebound, and the NASDAQ even reached the green for a short spell. Then, news broke that the first recorded case of Wuhan Coronavirus (which has killed six people in China) has been documented in the United States, and the indices all broke lower. Overall, the indices ended the day near the lows, with the Dowclosing down 152 points, the S&P 500 was off by nine points, and the NASDAQ fell 18 points.
