Stock Market Today: January 21, 2020

01/21/2020 The stock market started in the red today, as tradersentimentwaned over the three-day holiday weekend. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 70 points in the early part of the session, while the other indices were down in tandem. However, the markets started to rebound, and the NASDAQ even reached the green for a short spell. Then, news broke that the first recorded case of Wuhan Coronavirus (which has killed six people in China) has been documented in the United States, and the indices all broke lower. Overall, the indices ended the day near the lows, with the Dowclosing down 152 points, the S&P 500 was off by nine points, and the NASDAQ fell 18 points.

Stock Market Today: January 15, 2020

01/15/2020 The majorU.S. equity indexes began today’s session with a solidmove to the upside, and the Dow Industrials, S&P 500, and NASDAQ all set record intraday highs. However, lateafternoonsellingerased some of the gains. The main news item today was the signing of a preliminarytradeagreement between the U.S. and China. The truce hopefully signals the end of the nearly two-year tariff war between the two nations, which had stoked fears over its potential impact on the global economy. At the closing bell, the 30-stock Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 91 points, while the broader S&P 500 were up a modest six points, and the tech-heavy NASDAQ composite gained seven points.

Traders were likely feeling up beat, as the United States and China are expected to sign a trade deal this week. Further, many on Wall Street may be looking forward to the start of the fourth-quarter earnings season. At the close of trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was ahead 83 points; the broader S&P 500 Index was up 23 points, and the NASDAQ was higher by 95 points.

Stock Market Today: December 27, 2019

12/27/2019 Stocks opened the final session of the week and the last Friday during 2019 continuing the strong rally that was set in motion weeks ago, with some further advances. On point, just minutes after the open, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was already up close to 80 points, while the tech-heavy NASDAQ, boosted by early strength in some high-profile names, was ahead by about 30 points. Both indexes, along with the S&P 500, reached additional all-time highs in the process. At that time, it seemed as though we would move steadily and definitively forward in uneventful fashion to close out the week.

Stock Market Today: October 21, 2019

10/21/2019 The stock market started in the green today, as trader sentiment improved over the weekend, which caused the composites to move higher in the first few moments of trading. However, some negative news concerning Boeing’s (BA) 737 Max plane came out over the weekend and dragged both that stock and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lower. It led the Dow to fall into the red for a brief spell. Still, the rest of the market held up quite well and started to march higher through the early morning and continued through the afternoon. The composites closed not far off from the day’s highs. Overall, the Dow closed higher by 57 points, while the S&P 500 was up around 21 points.

Stock Market Today: October 16, 2019

10/16/2019 he stock marketopened lower this morning and was unable to meaningfully recover much ground as the day unfolded. Traders seemed to be exercising some caution, after some weak economic reports were posted earlier today. Further, Wall Street seemed concerned that relations with China could sour, especially if tensions with Hong Kong persist and the U.S. starts to take sides in this matter. By the end of the session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 23 points; the broader S&P 500 Index was off six points; and the NASDAQ was lower by 25 points.
