Stock Market Today: May 16, 2019

05/16/2019 The market started trading higher today, as solid earnings reports out of Dow components Cisco Systems and Walmart helped improvemarket sentiment. At the open, the composites started to rise considerably, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained as many as 230 points in the early portion of the session. Meantime, the S&P 500 was up by 40 points at its apex. However, the major market averages gave back a notable portion of the day’s gains during the afternoon. All told, the Dow closed the day up 215 points, the S&P 500 finished higher by 25 points, and the NASDAQ gained 76 points.

Stock Market Today: May 15, 2019

05/15/2019 The stock market opened lower this morning, but quickly reversed course and continued to move higher through much of the afternoon, before some last-minute selling. Investors may be getting used to the disappointing news that a trade deal between the U.S. and China has failed to materialize as hoped.

Stock Market Today: May 14, 2019

05/14/2019 The stock market opened higher, as sentiment increased that a trade deal with China would be completed at some point. This caused the markets to trend in an upward fashion throughout the first portion of the session. In fact, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by around 340 points by noon, while the S&P 500 and NASDAQ were also along for the ride. In the afternoon, the trend moved from upward to sideways, though new highs for the session were made in the course of trading. Still, the composites tapered off in the final portion of the session. All told, the Dow gained 207 points, the S&P 500 finished higher by 23 points, and the NASDAQ was up 87 points.

Stock Market Today: April 25, 2019

04/25/2019 The stock market put in a mixed-to-weak performance today, as investors digested the latest batch of corporate profit reports. At the end of the session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 135 points (after a sharper drop of more than 285 points earlier this morning). The S&P 500 Index closed off nominally, as well. However, the NASDAQ managed to advance 17 points.

03/04/2019 Stocks opened higher this morning, pulled back sharply around noon, but managed to recover some ground later in the day. Today’s market volatility was likely caused by investor concerns about the ongoing trade negotiations taking place between the U.S. and China. At the close of trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down roughly 207 points; the S&P 500 Index was off 11 points; and the NASDAQ was lower by 18 points.

Stock Market Today: February 26, 2019

02/26/2019 The marketstarted trading lower today, owing to reports of weaker-than-expected earnings from a few names, including Dow-30 component Home Depot.  Additionally, mixed economic news did not inspire investors. Though trading throughout the rest of session was a bit choppy, much of the final portion of the day occurred in a largely sideways fashion. In the final moments of trading, the markets sold off modestly. All told, the Dow closed lower by 34 points, the S&P 500 was down two points, and the NASDAQ slipped five points.

Stock Market Today: January 29, 2019

01/29/2019 The stock market started the day modestly higher, as some decent earnings reports boosted investor confidence. Indeed, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up by almost 150 points at its apex, while the S&P 500 and NASDAQ were higher in tandem. However, the markets started to selectively fall, as fears about the likelihood of a trade deal with China crept in. These concerns appeared to be short lived, and the markets bounced in the final portion of the trading session. All told, the Dow finished the day higher by around 52 points, while the S&P 500 slipped about four points, and the NASDAQ fell 57 points.
