Stock Market Today: October 31, 2018

10/31/2018 The U.S. equity markets began the day with a strong upward move and then added to those gains before some profit takers moved in late in the session. Traders got an early shot in the arm with this morning’s report from ADP showing that October payrolls expanded by 227,000, some 60,000 ahead of estimates. Results likely reflected recoveries in the wake of Hurricanes Michael and Florence, however increases were distributed across a wide range of industries.

Stock Market Today: October 2, 2018

10/02/2018 The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit an all-time high today, trading up to 26,824.78 (up 173.57 from the prior close). The S&P 500 also was higher in early market trading. Meantime, the Russell 2000 started the day lower. Importantly, as the day progressed, these indices fell from earlier prices, rebounding just before 4PM. Declining equities outpaced advancers by a rate of 1.5 to 1 on the big board, suggesting the move lower was broad. Consumer staples and utility stocks, the relative safe-haven areas, outperformed on the day and financials and consumer discretionary issues lagged the broader markets.

Stock Market Today: October 1, 2018

10/01/2018 The stock market moved nicely higher this morning, fueled by news of a new trade agreement between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Nonetheless, by the end of the day, the session took on a mixed tone, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average ahead 193 points; the broader S&P 500 Index up 11 points; and the NASDAQ lower by nine points. Market breadth showed a divided session, too, with decliners slightly outpacing advancers on the NYSE. From a sector perspective, the energy and basic materials issues managed to gain ground, while the utility names retreated.

Stock Market Today: August 14, 2018

08/14/2018 The stock market opened higher this morning, managed to extend its gains through much of the afternoon, before easing slightly in the final hour of the session. At the close of trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was ahead 112 points; the broader S&P 500 Index was up 18 points; and the NASDAQ was higher by 52 points. Market breadth showed broad support for equities, with advancers ahead of decliners by a wide margin on the NYSE.

Stock Market Today: January 29, 2018

01/29/2018 The equity markets began a new week on Wall Street with a lackluster showing. At the end of trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 177 points; the broader S&P 500 Index was off 19 points; and the technology laden NASDAQ was lower by 39 points. Market breadth showed a negative bias, too, with losers easily outpacing winners on the NYSE. Further, all of the major stock market sectors lost ground, with pronounced weakness in the energy and telecommunications issues. Meanwhile, the healthcare names managed to display some relative strength.
