Dow 30 Earnings: Coca-Cola Fourth Quarter 2017

02/16/2018 The Coca-Cola Company finished 2017 with a solid set of results. The beverage giant, one of the components of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, has reported December-quarter comparable earnings of $0.39 a share, a 5% increase from the prior-year period and a penny ahead of our estimate. (Our presentation excludes $1.05 in net nonrecurring charges, mostly related to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Acts.) Full-year profits finished at $1.91, flat with 2016, but still 8% below the $2.08 reached in 2013.

02/16/2018 The major U.S. stock indexes started the Friday before the long President’s Day weekend somewhat undecidedly, but the bulls soon took over the reins. For a while, it looked like equities would easily chalk up a sixth straight win, but things got shaky after it was reported that 13 Russians were indicted for interfering with the 2016 U.S. elections.

Dow 30 Earnings: Cisco Systems Second Quarter Fiscal 2018

02/15/2018 Networking hardware and software giant Cisco Systems reported solid results for the January quarter. The top line rose 3.3% year over year to $11.9 billion, the first positive showing in two years. Adjusted earnings per share of $0.63 increased an impressive 11%.

Stock Market Today: February 15, 2018

02/15/2018 The stock market opened higher, quickly pulled back, and then staged a solid recovery that lasted through the afternoon. At the close of trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was ahead 307 points, crossing over the 25,000 mark; the broader S&P 500 Index was up 33 points; and the technology-laden NASDAQ was higher by 113 points. Market breadth was positive, with winners nicely ahead of losers on the NYSE. From a sector viewpoint, the utility shares and technology stocks led the market higher, while the energy names failed to participate in today’s advance.

Stock Market Today: February 14, 2018

02/14/2018 The outcome was in doubt early on, but stocks shrugged off another inflation scare to finish the day sharply higher. At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 253 points; the NASDAQ gained 130 points, which was a better showing on a percentage basis than the Dow; and the S&P 500 finished ahead by 36 points. Market breadth confirmed the upturn, as advancing issues outpaced decliners by better-than a two-to-one margin.

At the close of the session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was ahead 39 points; the broader S&P 500 Index was up seven points; and the NASDAQ was higher by 32 points. Market breadth was somewhat favorable, as advancers led decliners by a modest margin on the NYSE.

Stock Market Today: February 8, 2018

02/08/2018 The stock market got off to a weak start this morning, and deteriorated on a much grander scale as the session progressed. In fact, by the close of trading, the major averages were at the low point for the day. Specifically, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down over 1,033 points; the broader S&P 500 Index was off just over 100 points; and the NASDAQ was lower by 275 points. Market breadth indicated widespread selling, with decliners well ahead of advancers on the NYSE. All of the major equity sectors lost ground today, with considerable losses in the technology and consumer names. Meanwhile, the utility issues, while still lower, showed a degree of relative strength.
