Stock Market Today: October 27, 2017

10/27/2017 9:21:38 AM The bulls were off and running at the opening bell and scarcely looked back, driven by a row of strong earnings from the technology sector. The NASDAQ 100 and S&P 500 indexes each reached historic highs and remained there through the closing bell, with the former boasting an impressive 142-point gain. Google-parent Alphabet (GOOG) and Amazon.com (AMZN) were two of the top gainers today.

Dow 30 Earnings: Exxon Mobil Corp. Second Quarter 2017

7/28/2017 10:10:04 AM Shares of oil giant Exxon Mobil (XOM) fell moderately after the company's second-quarter 2017 earnings came in short of expectations. Exxon generated $0.78 a share in profits during the period. While that was up from $0.41 a year earlier, it was less than our $0.95-a-share estimate and the Wall Street consensus, which had been falling in recent weeks on a pullback in oil prices. Given profit shortfall, we are reducing our full-year 2017 share-net estimate to $3.75 from $4.05.

Stock Market Today: July 24, 2017

7/24/2017 8:56:17 AM With second-quarter earnings season warming up, the U.S. stock market experienced a slight, broad-based pullback with select pockets of growth today. Though the Dow and S&P 500 both spent most of the day in the red, both pared losses as the afternoon rolled on. The S&P, in fact, worked its way back near the breakeven line by the close, even though market breadth favored the bears from bell to bell.

Stock Market Today: June 20, 2017

6/20/2017 8:49:53 AM U.S. stocks retreated from the highs set on Monday, with each of the three major indexes trading near their intraday lows as the closing bell approached. The day-long selloff can be mostly attributed to weakness in the energy sector, where cautious optimism that OPEC and other producers would inject some normalcy into the market has all but faded. Lingering doubts stemming from lackluster releases from the business beat in the past week were additional headwinds likely bolstering the bears’ campaign today. Disappointing metrics on retail, industrial production, housing starts and others have added credence to the growing consensus that 2.5% GDP growth in the quarter is more likely than the 3% estimate from a few months ago. All but one of the ten major market sectors closed in the red today, while the NASDAQ registered the widest loss, 51 points (0.82%).

5/4/2017 8:36:17 AM The stock market made little progress today, after being lower most of the session. In all, at the close of trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was off six points, while the S&P 500 Index and the NASDAQ were ahead slightly. Meanwhile, market breadth was negative, as losers outnumbered winners on the NYSE.

Stock Market Today: February 23, 2017

2/23/2017 8:45:15 AM Thursday’s market breadth was roughly even, with widespread selling amongst mid- and small-cap equities offsetting an afternoon rally principally by the Dow Jones Industrial Average. After solid openings, and subsequent pullbacks into the red, the Dow and, to a lesser degree, the S&P 500 strengthened as the day wore on. The former added 35 points on its way to setting yet another all-time closing high, while the latter salvaged a modest gain by the closing bell. The NASDAQ, meanwhile, was unable to turn its fortunes around, and saw the end of its fifteen-day streak of gains.
