At the close of trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was ahead 112 points; the broader S&P 500 Index was up 18 points; and the NASDAQ was higher by 52 points. Market breadth showed broad support for equities, with advancers ahead of decliners by a wide margin on the NYSE.

Market breadth showed a negative bias, too, with losers easily outpacing winners on the NYSE. Further, all of the major stock market sectors lost ground, with pronounced weakness in the energy and telecommunications issues.
