Stock Market Today: August 24, 2017

8/24/2017 8:38:54 AM After an up-and-down morning and bearish lull through the midday hours, the U.S. large-cap indexes finished Thursday in a range-bound pattern near their respective breakeven lines. Profit taking continues to be a headwind for the averages, as many opportunistic traders take advantage of Tuesday’s solid climb after a several-week period of difficulty.

Stock Market Today: July 28, 2017

7/28/2017 9:22:13 AM The U.S. equity markets opened lower on Friday as traders weighed a disappointing earnings update in the tech sector with an encouraging advance in the initial second-quarter GDP reading. With roughly even market breadth as a backdrop, the S&P 500 and NASDAQ extended their Thursday losses early in the day. Though the afternoon saw each pare their respective losses intermittently, with a final-hour push from the bulls, the rallies lacked the staying power to instill a change in direction at the end of the day.

Stock Market Today: June 20, 2017

6/20/2017 8:49:53 AM U.S. stocks retreated from the highs set on Monday, with each of the three major indexes trading near their intraday lows as the closing bell approached. The day-long selloff can be mostly attributed to weakness in the energy sector, where cautious optimism that OPEC and other producers would inject some normalcy into the market has all but faded. Lingering doubts stemming from lackluster releases from the business beat in the past week were additional headwinds likely bolstering the bears’ campaign today. Disappointing metrics on retail, industrial production, housing starts and others have added credence to the growing consensus that 2.5% GDP growth in the quarter is more likely than the 3% estimate from a few months ago. All but one of the ten major market sectors closed in the red today, while the NASDAQ registered the widest loss, 51 points (0.82%).

Stock Market Today: May 26, 2017

5/26/2017 9:10:19 AM Stocks spent most of today’s session moving in a sideways range around the neutral line, and ultimately ended on a mixed note. Some of the caution seen today may have to do with the fact that the market has logged a string of daily gains, and may be in need of a pause. In addition, traders may be sitting on the sidelines, as a holiday weekend is approaching, and the market will be closed on Monday. At the close of trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down about three points; the broader S&P 500 Index was up nearly a point; and the NASDAQ was higher by five points.

3/24/2017 8:57:50 AM Equitiespressed ahead this morning, weakened in the early afternoon, before rebounding sharply late in the session, and subsequently wilting again near the close. Of note, traders were taking their cue from Washington, where politicians are currently debating the nation’s healthcare system. Stock Market Today: March 8, 2017

3/8/2017 8:54:22 AM U.S. equity trading was mixed for most of Wednesday, until a late-day selloff sent the averages lower. Only the NASDAQ was able to avoid negative territory on the day, but even it struggled as the closing bell neared. The tech-heavy sector managed to finish the day up nearly four points, 22 notches lower than its mid-afternoon apex. The late-day drop was particularly evident in the broad-based S&P 500 and Russell 2000 indexes. Overall, today’s decline was mostly a continuation of the recent softness to what has been a historically bullish market for most of the past four months.
