Stock Market Today: November 12, 2018

11/12/2018 9:11:30 AM The bulls made it two straight winning weeks on Wall Street, which was no small feat given the difficult performance for equities in October. Over the most recent five-day stretch of trading some of the uncertainty dissipated with the results of the midterm elections and the conclusion of the Federal Reserve’s two-day monetary policy meeting. Both events seemed to match the investment community’s expectations.  With less than a half hour to go before the commencement of trading stateside, the equity futures are pointing to a soft opening for the U.S. stock market.

Dow 30 Earnings: The Walt Disney Company Fourth Quarter Fiscal 2018

Stock Market Today: November 9, 2018

11/9/2018 7:46:17 AM Stocks took a breather from their post-election rally and closed the week lower on Friday. At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was off 202 points; the NASDAQ slumped 124 points; and the S&P 500 gave back 26 points. The broader market followed suit, with about two stocks declining for every one advancing on the New York Stock Exchange. More stocks hit 52-week lows than highs.

The Federal Reserve Held The Line On Interest Rates This Afternoon

11/8/2018 2:52:21 PM An increasingly transparent Federal Reserve did the expected earlier this afternoon and the stock market yawned. On point, the lead bank's FOMC meeting voted unanimously to keep the federal funds rate target unchanged at 2.25%. This was the penultimate Fed meeting of this year, with one more get together scheduled for next month.

Stock Market Today: November 8, 2018

11/8/2018 8:52:01 AM Early trading was mixed today, as participants waited for the results of the Federal Reserve’s FOMC meeting. The indices fell on the statement release, before quickly rebounding to their prior levels in the next few minutes. As the day progressed, the broader markets resumed their decline and hit fresh daily lows for a brief spell. Overall, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended nominally higher, while the NASDAQ fell 0.5%.

Wall Street seemed relatively pleased with the results of the mid-term elections, which largely unfolded as expected. The stock market generally does not like uncertainty, and today’s rally would seem to suggest that traders are feeling more confident about the political landscape.

Dow 30 Earnings: Chevron Corp. Third Quarter 2018

11/2/2018 12:57:15 PM Petroleum industry leader Chevron (CVX) saw its shares rise nicely when the company reported that third-quarter profits more than doubled. Earnings jumped to $2.11 a share from $1.03 a year earlier. Our estimate was for $2.10. The company would have earned even more except for asset writedowns and unfavorable currency translation rates.
