Stock Market Today: June 20, 2017

06/20/2017 U.S. stocks retreated from the highs set on Monday, with each of the three major indexes trading near their intraday lows as the closing bell approached. The day-long selloff can be mostly attributed to weakness in the energy sector, where cautious optimism that OPEC and other producers would inject some normalcy into the market has all but faded. Lingering doubts stemming from lackluster releases from the business beat in the past week were additional headwinds likely bolstering the bears’ campaign today. Disappointing metrics on retail, industrial production, housing starts and others have added credence to the growing consensus that 2.5% GDP growth in the quarter is more likely than the 3% estimate from a few months ago. All but one of the ten major market sectors closed in the red today, while the NASDAQ registered the widest loss, 51 points (0.82%).

Stock Market Today: February 23, 2017

02/23/2017 Thursday’s market breadth was roughly even, with widespread selling amongst mid- and small-cap equities offsetting an afternoon rally principally by the Dow Jones Industrial Average. After solid openings, and subsequent pullbacks into the red, the Dow and, to a lesser degree, the S&P 500 strengthened as the day wore on. The former added 35 points on its way to setting yet another all-time closing high, while the latter salvaged a modest gain by the closing bell. The NASDAQ, meanwhile, was unable to turn its fortunes around, and saw the end of its fifteen-day streak of gains.

Using The Value Line Report: Oil Price Recovery Helps Exxon Mobil and Chevron

09/22/2016 It is no secret that oil prices are significantly lower than they were in mid-2014. Natural gas quotations have weakened since then, as well. This has hurt companies involved in upstream oil and gas, including Dow 30 components Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX). However, since February of 2016, oil prices have risen, although the recovery has been choppy. The companies’ prospects have improved as well, but are not what they were just a few years ago.
