Stock Market Today: April 22, 2019

04/22/2019 Stocks opened the week in unexciting fashion following the long holiday weekend. With earnings season set to move into high gear, investors are likely waiting to see what bellwether corporations have to say about their performance and prospects in the coming days. At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 48 points; but the NASDAQ gained 17 points and the S&P 500 inched ahead three points. Market breadth was tilted to the downside, though. The number of declining issues outpaced gainers by a three to two margin on the New York Stock Exchange.

Stock Market Today: April 17, 2019

04/17/2019 The major averages opened higher today, but soon turned lower. At the end of the day, the final numbers showedsome weakness. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which had been ahead late in afternoon, slipped into negative territory, closing down three points. In addition, the S&P 500 Index was off about seven points, and the NASDAQ was lower by four points.

At the end of the session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 28 points; the S&P 500 Index was off almost two points; and the NASDAQ was lower by eight points. Market breadth showed a divided session, with decliners outpacing advancers by a narrow margin on the NYSE.

Market breadth showed some support for equities, as advancers were easily ahead of decliners on the NYSE.

01/16/2019 The stock market made some solid progress today, helped by a batch of constructive corporate profit reports. Although stocks eased a bit in the final hour of trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average still ended the session ahead 142 points; the S&P 500 Index was up six points; and the technology-heavy NASDAQ was higher by 11 points.

Dow 30 Earnings: JPMorgan Chase Fourth Quarter 2018

01/15/2019 JPMorgan Chase  (JPM) one of the largest banks in the United States and a component of the Dow 30, turned in disappointing results for the final quarter of 2018. The stock slipped modestly on the news. The company reported December-quarter share net of $1.98 and full-year 2018 results of $9.00. Earnings were significantly better than the $1.76 logged in the final quarter of 2017 and full-year 2017 results of $6.87, both adjusted for a $0.69-a-share charge for the upfront impact of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

Stock Market Today: January 14, 2019

01/14/2019 The stock market headed lower earlier this morning, but managed to recover partial ground in the afternoon. Initially, investors may have been worried about corporate profits at home, as well as a slower global economic outlook. Of note, strained relations with China, as well as Britain’s plan to exit the E.U. remain areas of concern.
