Stock Market Today: October 21, 2019

10/21/2019 The stock market started in the green today, as trader sentiment improved over the weekend, which caused the composites to move higher in the first few moments of trading. However, some negative news concerning Boeing’s (BA) 737 Max plane came out over the weekend and dragged both that stock and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lower. It led the Dow to fall into the red for a brief spell. Still, the rest of the market held up quite well and started to march higher through the early morning and continued through the afternoon. The composites closed not far off from the day’s highs. Overall, the Dow closed higher by 57 points, while the S&P 500 was up around 21 points.

10/18/2019 The stock market traded notably lower late this morning, and remained in the loss column throughout the afternoon. Of note, despite the recent announcements, some on Wall Street may be looking for further assurances that at least a limited trade deal will be signed with China in the near future. By the end of the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 255 points; while the broader S&P 500 Index was off 12 points; and the NASDAQ was lower by 67 points.

Stock Market Today: April 18, 2019

04/18/2019 The market started slightly higher today, as solid earnings reports out of American Express (AXP) and The Travelers Companies (TRV) helped improve sentiment. Too, U.S. jobless claims reached a 50-year low, while March retail sales posted a much bigger-than-expected increase of 1.6%, aided by good auto and gasoline sales. These moves caused the market to move higher in the first moments of trading with the Dow Jones Industrial Average moving nicely to the upside. However, early trading was rather choppy.

Stock Market Today: January 24, 2019

01/24/2019 The market opened slightly lower today, as fears increased about the reduced possibility of an imminent trade deal with China. This was partially exacerbated by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross stating that the two countries were not close to striking a deal. Early trading was choppy, as a few strong earnings reports buoyed the broader market, and some good economic news, including a new low in jobless claims, aided stock prices. Altogether, the Dow finished down 22 points, while the S&P 500 closed higher by around four points, and the NASDAQ was up about 48 points.

Stock Market Today: January 23, 2019

01/23/2019 Stocks turned in a choppy session on Wednesday, rising sharply early before losing their gains along the way and ending in uneven fashion. Some of the swings can probably be traced to word that the economy might not expand at all in the first quarter, if the partial government shutdown drags on. Kevin Hassett, the Chairman of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, was quoted saying as much this morning.
