Stock Market Today: October 11, 2019

10/11/2019 The stock market opened sharply higher this morning, extended its early gains through much of the afternoon, but then softenedinto the close. Of note, earlier today, Wall Street seemed optimistic that some progress would result from the current round of negotiations taking place between the United States and China. Later in the day, it was reported that some positive steps had actually been achieved. By the end of the session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up nearly 320 points; the broader S&P 500 Index was ahead 32 points; and the NASDAQ was higher by 106 points.

Stock Market Today: October 8, 2019

10/08/2019 Markets started the session with sizable losses, and failed to gain much traction as the morning wore on. Although stocks did show some life down the stretch, late afternoon selling dragged the major indexes to their lows for the day. Not surprisingly, trade relations between the U.S. and China continued to be a major factor.

Stock Market Today: September 25, 2019

09/25/2019 The stock market started positively today, helped by good results from Dow-component NIKE (NKE), which reached an all-time high during the session. Also, new home sales were higher than expected, boosted by lower interest rates. These led to the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbing by 105 points in early action. However, this positive action quickly reversed itself, and the composites found themselves in the red for a spell. Then, news broke that President Trump stated that “it could happen sooner than you think” regarding a potential U.S. trade deal with China. The Dow shot up around 150 points at that time.

Stock Market Today: September 12, 2019

09/12/2019 The futures market started positively, as a de-escalation of trade tensions between the U.S. and China occurred overnight. The United States stated that it would delay some tariffs on goods from China from October 1st to October 15th “in a gesture of goodwill.” So, the stock market started the day higher, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up by 132 points quickly, while the other indices were higher in tandem. Ultimately, the Dow traded just under all-time highs. The NASDAQ and S&P 500 also traded within 1% of their highest levels. In the final part of the session, the markets gave back a large portion of the daily gains. All told, the Dow closed higher by 45 points, the S&P 500 was up nine points, and the NASDAQincreased 25 points.

Stock Market Today: September 10, 2019

09/10/2019 The stock market opened lower this morning, but managed to recover all of its ground, and then some, as the session unfolded. Of note, earlier today, a weak economic report in China may have ignited investor concerns that the world’s second largest economy, and the broader global outlook, could suffer if a trade deal does not materialize soon. However, by the end of the session, the situation looked a bit better.

Stock Market Today: August 27, 2019

08/27/2019 Following a meltdown on Wall Street this past Friday, after threats by China and the United States to further ratchet up their already intense trade war and a seeming standoff between the warring parties over the past weekend, the U.S. equity futures started out sharply to the downside in trading Sunday night. Then, the President suggested that China wanted to resume trade talks and that the two sides would again sit down to hopefully try and hammer out their differences. That helped the futures do an about face and move notably higher in the pre-market hours.

Stock Market Today: August 14, 2019

08/14/2019 Stocks turned sharply lower this morning, and encountered further selling during the midday hours, and into the afternoon. Investors were rattled by some disturbing developments in the bond market, which stoked fears of a possible economic slowdown or even a recession. Specifically, the yield on the government’s 10-year Treasury moved below the yield on the two-year note, creating a situation known as an inverted yield curve.

Stock Market Today: August 7, 2019

08/07/2019 Equities opened notably lower this morning, but managed to reverse course in the afternoon, ending the day on a mixed-to-positive note. The weakness earlier today was likely due to investor concerns about a protracted trade dispute between the U.S. and China, and plunging global bond yields. By the close of the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 22 points; the broader S&P 500 Index was ahead two points; and the NASDAQ was higher by 30 points.

Stock Market Today: August 6, 2019

08/06/2019 The markets closed the session yesterday much lower. The U.S. Treasury Department labeled China a “currency manipulator” following the large move in the yuan. However, the futures markets started to creep higher throughout the night. And the yuan began to stabilize. By the time the U.S.  stock market opened, the indices were solidly in the green, though the final push higher was helped by a few decent earnings reports. Overall, the markets finished not far from the highs, and the Dow was up 312 points, the S&P 500 recovered 37 points, and the NASDAQ increased 107 points.
