Stock Market Today: January 31, 2019

01/31/2019 Early trading was defined by a divergence in the key stock indexes. Indeed, the Dow Jones Industrial Average started the day lower, as weaker-than-expected results from DowDuPont weighed on that index. On the other hand, the S&P 500 and NASDAQtrendedhigher, thanks to strong results from Facebook. These were partially aided by continued positive sentiment following the Fed’s call for patience regarding further interest rate hikes. However, later in the session, the marketsslowlytapered off, and reversed some of these early gains. All told, the Dow closed down just 13 points, while the S&P 500 was higher by around 23 points, and NASDAQ rose 99 points.

Dow 30 Earnings: Apple Inc. First Quarter Fiscal 2019

01/30/2019 Apple (AAPL) shares are getting bid up, recovering back into the $160s, on the heels of the tech behemoth's earnings report for the first quarter of fiscal 2019 (year ends September 28th). Results for the period were roughly in line with the early January preannouncement, when the company warned that sales would fall short of initial expectations because of challenging operating conditions in China and softer demand for new, high-priced iPhones. But guidance for the March interim, calling for revenues of $57 billion at the midpoint, was better than what many money managers were anticipating, suggesting that Apple may be moving past the worst of its rough patch.

Stock Market Today: November 20, 2018

11/20/2018 Trading in the broader markets was weak today, as the indices fell to near their October lows in early market action. This was caused by some underwhelming economic reports, including lackluster housing data and some worrying retail projections. The S&P 500 briefly traded in correction territory, while at around 10:00 AM EST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell about 560 points from the prior-day’s close. However, the indices decidedly bounced from these levels, as the Dow recovered some 300 points in one swift, but brief, move. Over the rest of the session, the markets made consecutively lower highs and lows before hitting new troughs. The Dow’s decline bottomed at around 650 points on the day and closed down 550 points, or 2.2%, overall.
