06/28/2018 Following a trying start to the day, the major U.S. indexes soared higher on Thursday afternoon, before a late pullback in the Dow eased the best gains. A recovery within the financial and technology industries, as well as strength from telecommunications equities, were the primary drivers for the uptick during the second half of the session.

Stock Market Today: March 1, 2018

03/01/2018 The stock market got off to a wobbly start this morning; then, briefly rallied, but turned sharply lower in the afternoon. The decline came in response to comments from the President, indicating that the country would soon be implementing import tariffs on metals, such as steel and aluminum.  The news sparked fears that raw materials prices could jump for many industrial and equipment companies, and spark price battles with international partners.

Stock Market Today: October 27, 2017

10/27/2017 The bulls were off and running at the opening bell and scarcely looked back, driven by a row of strong earnings from the technology sector. 08/24/2017 After an up-and-down morning and bearish lull through the midday hours, the U.S. large-cap indexes finished Thursday in a range-bound pattern near their respective breakeven lines. Stock Market Today: July 28, 2017

07/28/2017 The U.S. equity markets opened lower on Friday as traders weighed a disappointing earnings update in the tech sector with an encouraging advance in the initial second-quarter GDP reading. With roughly even market breadth as a backdrop, the S&P 500 and NASDAQ extended their Thursday losses early in the day. Though the afternoon saw each pare their respective losses intermittently, with a final-hour push from the bulls, the rallies lacked the staying power to instill a change in direction at the end of the day.

Stock Market Today: June 20, 2017

06/20/2017 U.S. stocks retreated from the highs set on Monday, with each of the three major indexes trading near their intraday lows as the closing bell approached. The day-long selloff can be mostly attributed to weakness in the energy sector, where cautious optimism that OPEC and other producers would inject some normalcy into the market has all but faded. Lingering doubts stemming from lackluster releases from the business beat in the past week were additional headwinds likely bolstering the bears’ campaign today. Disappointing metrics on retail, industrial production, housing starts and others have added credence to the growing consensus that 2.5% GDP growth in the quarter is more likely than the 3% estimate from a few months ago. All but one of the ten major market sectors closed in the red today, while the NASDAQ registered the widest loss, 51 points (0.82%).

Stock Market Today: May 26, 2017

05/26/2017 Stocks spent most of today’s session moving in a sideways range around the neutral line, and ultimately ended on a mixed note. Some of the caution seen today may have to do with the fact that the market has logged a string of daily gains, and may be in need of a pause. In addition, traders may be sitting on the sidelines, as a holiday weekend is approaching, and the market will be closed on Monday. At the close of trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down about three points; the broader S&P 500 Index was up nearly a point; and the NASDAQ was higher by five points.
