Stock Market Today: March 24, 2017

03/24/2017 Equitiespressed ahead this morning, weakened in the early afternoon, before rebounding sharply late in the session, and subsequently wilting again near the close. Of note, traders were taking their cue from Washington, where politicians are currently debating the nation’s healthcare system. At the close of the session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was off 60 points; the broader S&P 500 Index was down two points; and the NASDAQ was up 11 points.

Stock Market Today: March 8, 2017

03/08/2017 U.S. equity trading was mixed for most of Wednesday, until a late-day selloff sent the averages lower. Only the NASDAQ was able to avoid negative territory on the day, but even it struggled as the closing bell neared. The tech-heavy sector managed to finish the day up nearly four points, 22 notches lower than its mid-afternoon apex. The late-day drop was particularly evident in the broad-based S&P 500 and Russell 2000 indexes. Overall, today’s decline was mostly a continuation of the recent softness to what has been a historically bullish market for most of the past four months.

The Beige Book Paints A Generally Upbeat Picture Of The U.S. Economy

03/01/2017 The Federal Reserve issued its Beige Book summation of the nation's economy. That compilation continued to paint a rosy picture of the U.S. economy. The central bank will now use the information taken from that closely watched summary to help it formulate monetary policy at its next FOMC meeting, which will commence on March 14th.

At the close of trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was ahead about 113 points; the broader S&P 500 Index was up nearly 15 points; and the NASDAQ was higher by 48 points. There was widespread support for equities today, as winners easily outpaced losers on the NYSE.

12/08/2016 Stocks managed to make further progress today. At the close of the session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 65 points; the broader S&P 500 Index was ahead nearly five points; and the NASDAQ was higher by 24 points. Support for equities was fairly widespread, as winners easily outpaced losers on the NYSE. From a sector perspective, the financial and basic materials names forged ahead, while the consumer non-cyclical issues retreated.

12/07/2016 The U.S. equity market soared on Wednesday afternoon, following a modest run up in the morning hours with a sharp increase that sent both the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average to all-time intraday trading highs. The latter adding more than 300 points as the closing bell approached in New York. Even the tech-heavy NASDAQ, which has been relatively choppy in recent weeks, registered a solid 85-point gain.

12/05/2016 Stocks logged another constructive session today. At the close of trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up approximately 46 points; the S&P 500 Index was ahead 13 points; and the NASDAQ was higher by 53 points. There was a decidedly favorable tone to today’s trading, as winners easily outpaced losers on the NYSE. Further, all of the major equity sectors made strides. Leadership was found in the technology and basic materials issues, while the high-yielding utility issues logged more modest gains.
